She's not the best vocalist, but the entire package of her writing/composing so much of her music, starting as a street performer, etc. That aside, she's always seemed to have issues with shyness even while being in a profession that's putting you out in public all the time. She's surrounded by the sort of "old guard" of Ayumi Hamasaki, Mr.Children, Koda Kumi and a few boy/girl groups (and the spinoffs from them). Looking at the top Oricon charts from around her peak ( ) there's not many artists that fit her niche. Maybe the phrase "product of the times" sort of makes sense here. Personally, I think what made her stand out was that at the time Japanese pop music didn't really have too much of what she made.
